Web Browsers

A browser is a software that is used to access the internet. A browser lets you visit websites and do activities within them like login, view multimedia, can link from one site to another, visit one page from another, print, send and receive emails, among many other activities. Web browsers are used to make it easy to access the World Wide Web. Browsers are able to display Web pages because of a Web protocol called HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP). A browser retrieves, presents and traverses information on the World Wide Web. Some home devices now includes web browsers like gaming consoles and smart TVs.

The first ever web browser was called WorldWideWeb which was created in 1990 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee who also created the World Wide Web. He decided to change the name to Nexus to stop the confusion between the World Wide Web and the browser. The most common browser software titles on the market nowadays are: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google's Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple's Safari and Opera. . Google Chrome is the most used web browser in the world as of June 2015. In the pie chart below, it shows that Google Chrome gets used 60% of the time when someone uses a web browser. Firefox has climbed up to 2nd most used and Internet Explorer is now 3rd.

Without Web Browsers it would be impossible to use the World Wide Web. Almost the whole population of the world use at least one web browser a day. Web Browsers are one of the vital things you need to use the World Wide Web.
